Getting the look
The classic looks
- The raider: a fur-trimmed tunic, a belt, wrist cuffs and a shield.
- The warrior: a helmet, a sword or axe and a rugged cloak.
- The shield maiden: a braided hairstyle, a leather-look tunic and a round shield.
- The chieftain: a heavier cloak, a fur collar and a large belt.
Vikings in storybooks and fairy tales
Vikings turn up in children's adventure stories, myths and sagas. Characters like Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragon show a friendlier, funnier side. Norse myths add gods, heroes and sea voyages. Picture books often show Vikings as bold sailors with dragon ships and big beards.
What makes each one recognisable
The horned helmet is the best known symbol, even though it is mostly a storybook and stage tradition. It works well for costumes because everyone knows it. A round wooden shield says Viking at once. Fur and braids finish the picture.
For a Hiccup style look, choose a green tunic, a fur vest and a braid or two. A dragon toy or picture makes the character clear.
Easy finishing touches
- Braided plaits, or a plaited beard for adults.
- Leather-look wrist cuffs and a wide belt.
- A cardboard shield, painted with a simple pattern.
- A fur-style cape or vest.
- Face paint for scars or war stripes. Do a small skin test first.
Children and adults
For children, choose light, soft pieces they can move in. Foam or plastic swords and helmets are easier to carry all day. Check the label for age and size, and make sure the eyes and feet are clear. Adults can go for a fuller look, with heavier fabrics, longer cloaks and a beard. Vikings suit groups well, so a family or class can mix warriors, chieftains and shield maidens.
