Mermaids in stories

Mermaids appear in folk tales and fairy tales from many places. In Hans Christian Andersen's story, the little mermaid gives up her voice to walk on land. Later retellings and films made her a bright, red-haired character with a green tail and a shell top.

Other stories show mermaids as sea queens, sirens or shy sea creatures. Book Week and World Book Day costumes often borrow from these, so the same tail can suit several characters.

For children, choose comfort first. A tail that is tight at the knees is hard to walk in, so look for a skirt style or a tail that comes off. Check the size chart and leave room for layers on cold days.

For adults, the choice is often about the occasion. A full tail suits a photo or a stage. A shorter fin skirt or a shell top with leggings is easier at a party. Think about sitting, stairs and getting to the bathroom.
