This is the classic choice for children, and it suits adults too. The signature pieces are a yellow skirt, a blue bodice with puffed sleeves, and a high white collar. A red hair bow finishes the look. Short dark hair or a dark wig helps if yours is not already dark.

The Evil Queen

A good pick for teenagers and adults, and for older children who like a darker character. Look for a long black gown, a high collar and a crown. Purple and black work well together. A hooded cloak is useful if you want the disguised version.

The Seven Dwarfs

Popular for groups, families and classrooms, since everyone can pick a dwarf. Each one wears a pointed hat, a simple tunic, a belt and boots. Choose a different hat colour for each character. Adults can wear these too, and they are comfortable for a long party.

Prince and Huntsman

The Prince needs a tunic or jacket, tights or plain trousers, and a cape. The Huntsman is simpler: a brown tunic, boots and a belt. Both suit older children and adults.

Easy touches to make at home

• A red apple: a real apple or a red paper one on a stick, for Snow White or the Queen.
• A paper hair bow: cut a strip of red card or fabric and fold it into a bow. Fix it to a headband.

If you use face paint for the Queen, do a small skin test first.

Choosing a size

Check the size chart against a recent measurement, and if a child is between sizes, go up so there is room to move.
