Who to dress as

Sherlock Holmes stories give you a good mix of characters. Most are easy to put together from clothes you may already own.

• Sherlock Holmes: the obvious choice, and it suits both children and adults.
• Dr Watson: a good pick for a pair or a group. Works for any age.
• Mrs Hudson: a comfortable choice for an adult, or for a child who likes old-fashioned dresses.
• Irene Adler: a stylish look for an adult or older teen.
• Professor Moriarty: a dark suit and a stern face. Best for adults or older children.

Signature pieces

For Holmes, start with the deerstalker hat and a long cape or overcoat. Add a pipe, or a toy one for children, and a magnifying glass. A checked scarf or waistcoat helps too.

Watson is smarter and plainer. Go for a waistcoat, a jacket, a bowler hat and a small doctor's bag.

Mrs Hudson needs a long dress, an apron and a shawl. A tea tray completes it.

Irene Adler suits a Victorian style gown or dress, gloves and a feathered hat or hair piece.

Moriarty is a black suit, a high collar and a cane.

Easy touches to make at home

• A case notebook: a small notebook and a pencil, ready for clues.
• A pocket watch: a chain on a waistcoat, with a round paper clock face on the end.

A cardboard magnifying glass also works well. Cut a ring, and tape a handle to it.

Choosing the right size

Check the size chart on the product page and measure the wearer first. If a child is between sizes, choose the larger one so there is room for layers underneath.
