Which characters suit whom

For younger children, the gentler monsters work best: a mummy, a friendly Frankenstein's monster or a cheerful skeleton. They are comfortable and not too scary.

For older children and teens, a vampire, a werewolf or a witch gives more room to play a part.

For adults, Dracula, the Bride of Frankenstein, the Wolf Man and the Mummy all read clearly at a party, even with a simple outfit.

Signature pieces

• Vampire (Dracula): a high-collared black cape, formal dark clothes and slicked-back hair.
• Frankenstein's monster: a dark jacket, a flat-topped head shape, green-tinted skin and bolts at the neck.
• Bride of Frankenstein: a long white gown and tall dark hair with white streaks.
• Mummy: wrapped bandage strips over plain clothes, with gaps left for the eyes.
• Werewolf: a shaggy hooded top or mask, clawed gloves and tattered trousers.

Finishing touches to make at home

Tea-stained bandages give a mummy an aged look. Soak strips of old cotton or sheet in cooled tea, then let them dry fully before wrapping.

Face paint can add stitches, scars or pale vampire skin. Do a small skin test first, and check the label.

Choosing the right size

Check the size chart before you order, measure the wearer, and choose the larger size if you are between two, so there is room for layers and easy movement.
