Alice

The classic choice for a child or an adult. Three things make her recognisable:

• A light blue dress
• A white apron over the top
• Long hair, with a black hairband or bow

White tights and dark shoes finish the look.

The Mad Hatter

A good pick for adults, and for older children who like a bold costume. You need a tall top hat, ideally with a paper tag tucked in the band, a bright bow tie and a colourful jacket. Mismatched patterns are part of the fun.

The Queen of Hearts

Works for both ages. Look for a red and black dress, a heart motif and a crown. Add a sceptre if you like. Red lips and heart-shaped cheeks make it stand out.

The White Rabbit

Easy for younger children. Choose white or light ears, a waistcoat and a bow or cravat. A toy pocket watch completes it.

The Cheshire Cat

Striped purple and pink is the giveaway. Cat ears, a tail and a wide grin do the rest.

Finishing touches and sizing

Two things are easy to make at home. Cut a playing card from card and pin it to a costume, or make a paper "Drink Me" label for a small bottle. Do a small skin test before using face paint.

For sizing, measure the wearer and check the size chart against those numbers. Children grow quickly, so choose by measurements rather than by age on the label.
